Philips IP&S chooses the KMX Patent Classifier
The solution of Treparel Information Solutions delivers very high precision In close cooperation with Philips Intellectual Property & Standards (IP&S), Treparel Information Solutions has developed the KMX Patent Classifier for semi-automatic classification of patents. This solution provides fast and clear insight in huge and complex patent data information. This increases the productivity and reduces the cost. The Treparel application makes use of Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition and Oracle Data Mining (ODM)
By classifying the patents, Philips IP&S is better able to analyse the patent landscape of technologies and companies. This detailed knowledge is of great strategic and commercial importance and value to Philips for the filing of new patents.

“Since quite some years, we have been searching for various solutions to assist us in the automatic classification of patents”, says Gerard van der Ligt, Director Business Intelligence of Philips IP&S.  “A high precision and recall is of utmost importance. The elaborate tests we have done, indicated that Treparel adhers to our very high standards in this area. We are now able to work faster, more efficient, but foremost, we can tackle complex jobs that were impossible to do by humans before”.

“Management of intellectual property is of great importance to companies such as Philips”, says Paul Wijdicks, Chief Commercial Officer at Treparel. “Classification of patents has always been done by humans up to this point. By deploying our solution, the process can be partly automated combined with a very high precision and recall. To do this, Treparel has developed a special application based on Treparels proprietary technology (KMX) combined with that of Oracle. During the development, a lot of attention has been paid to the user interface. To guarantee the processing speed and scalaebility, we have made use of HP Integrity servers with built-in Itanium 2-processors.” go back
